Psychotherapy involves a confidential, professional relationship in which you can think together with someone about your life. You may have felt depressed, anxious or angry for some time, or you may want help to find your way through a short-term problem. You might have a chronic illness that interferes with your emotional as well as physical well-being.

Some people have difficulties they can't easily talk to friends or family about. Some people want to get a better understanding of experiences they have had, to help them move ahead.

As well as thinking and talking about your experiences, psychotherapy can involve attention to body sensations and feelings it is not easy to find words for. You may remember bits of dreams, or you may describe situations using visual images that occur to you. Whatever comes up can turn out to be meaningful, even when it doesn’t seem to make any obvious sense at first.

My training was in a mindfulness-based type of psychotherapy. Mindfulness means putting your attention on what you're experiencing at this very moment, without judging it. Although mindfulness has been talked about a lot in recent years, in fact psychotherapy has always involved paying attention to what seems to be happening right here, right now, between the two people in the room, and thinking about that. This process can help you become aware of painful or limiting ways of managing that you may have developed through your life. With growing awareness, these strategies can loosen, so that you can live with more choice and ease.

Practical questions

I have experience of working online and am currently conducting some sessions online or by phone. Working remotely can feel a little strange to begin with, but my experience is that using video calls, or voice calls where preferred, can work well. Where remote working is not effective, it may be possible to meet in person depending on the guidelines and government exemption for mental health services at the time. I am happy to discuss the precautions I take to minimise the risk of Covid transmission when working face to face.

I offer an introductory meeting without charge. This gives you an opportunity to meet me, ask questions and get an idea of whether psychotherapy might be helpful to you.

Sessions are one hour and take place at the same time each week. My fee is currently £52 per session.

My location is off Histon Road/B1049 in the northwestern part of Cambridge. It's easy to come in by car from Junction 32 of the A14 (Histon interchange) or it takes about 30 minutes to walk (12 to cycle) from the centre of Cambridge.

Qualifications and experience

I have been working with clients in private practice for over 12 years and am registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy - registration number 07158940.

I trained at Karuna Institute in Devon between 2003 and 2009, leading to an MA in Core Process Psychotherapy. My continuing professional development since then has included a 12-day training in working with trauma, with Babette Rothschild, and further learning from psychodynamic approaches.

Ben jij Nederlandstalig?
